BMW servicing explained: what CBS actually tells you

Ask when a BMW is due a service and you'll get a straight answer far less often than you'd expect. That's because BMW stopped using fixed service intervals back in 1982 and let the car work it out instead. The system is called Condition Based Service, usually shortened to CBS, and once you understand what it's showing you it's genuinely useful. Until then it's a set of coloured bars that mean very little. Here's what it's tracking, what the car is actually asking for, and the couple of BMW-specific jobs that catch people out.
Your BMW decides when it needs a service, not the calendar
Most cars run to a schedule: every twelve months or so many thousand miles, whichever comes first. BMW moved away from that decades ago. Instead the car monitors how it's actually being used and works out when each item genuinely needs attention.
That means two identical BMWs can be due completely different things at the same mileage. One doing steady motorway miles will go a long way between oil services. One doing short cold trips across town, where the engine barely warms through, will ask far sooner. The car is right and the generic schedule is wrong, which is the whole point of the system.
The practical upshot is that you can't answer "when is my BMW due a service" from a table. You read it off the car.
What CBS is actually monitoring
CBS doesn't track one thing called 'a service'. It tracks a list of items separately, each with its own remaining life, which is why the display often shows several things at different stages. Judging by what BMW itself covers under its service packages, and what the car reports, the list runs roughly like this:
- Engine oil, by far the one that moves most
- The micro filter, which is the cabin or pollen filter
- The air filter
- Front brake pads and rear brake pads, tracked separately
- Brake fluid, which runs on time rather than use
- Spark plugs on petrol engines, and the fuel filter on diesels
- The vehicle check, and the date your MOT is due
Reading the display: green, yellow, red
Each item is colour coded, and the colours mean what you'd hope. Green is fine and has plenty of life left. Yellow or amber means it's getting close and should be booked in. Red means it's overdue.
BMW gives you roughly four weeks of warning before something falls due, which is deliberate: it's a scheduling window, not an alarm. You'll find the detail on the car's info display, and on newer cars in the My BMW app, usually with a remaining distance or a date against each item rather than just a colour.
Worth knowing: an amber oil item is not an emergency and you don't need to stop. A red brake pad warning is a different matter and wants dealing with promptly.
The dipstick problem
A lot of newer BMWs have no dipstick at all. The oil level is measured electronically and reported through the dashboard menu, which is fine when it works and confusing the first time you go looking for a dipstick that isn't there.
Two things follow. First, checking the oil means going into the car's menu and letting it take a reading, usually with the engine warm and the car level, which takes a minute or two rather than being instant. Second, if you top up yourself, it's easy to overfill, because you're working from a bar on a screen rather than seeing the level on a stick. Overfilling a modern engine is not harmless, so add oil in small amounts and re-check.
BMW is fussy about which oil goes in
BMW publishes its own oil standards rather than relying only on the general industry grades, and you'll see them written as Longlife specifications: Longlife-01, Longlife-04 and newer ones besides. They are not interchangeable.
The important distinction in practice is particulate filters. Engines fitted with one, which means diesels and a lot of more recent petrols, need a low ash oil, because ordinary oil leaves deposits that clog the filter over time. Using a cheaper oil that doesn't meet the right BMW standard is the kind of saving that costs a great deal later, and the damage is gradual enough that nobody connects it to the oil change that caused it.
Which standard your specific car needs comes down to the engine and what's in its exhaust system, so it's checked against the car rather than guessed. If you've bought your own oil and it carries the right BMW approval, that's absolutely fine and we'll use it.
Rear brakes and the electronic parking brake
This is the one that surprises people, and it's a genuine reason some places won't touch the rear brakes on a BMW away from a workshop.
On most modern BMWs the parking brake is electronic rather than a cable and lever. The rear caliper pistons are driven by small motors, so they can't simply be wound back by hand to make room for new pads. The car has to be put into a service mode that retracts them, and then reset afterwards. Without the equipment to do that, the rear pads cannot be changed properly, and forcing it damages the caliper.
It's worth asking about before you book anything, whoever you're booking with. Front pads on a BMW are a straightforward driveway job. Rears need the parking brake dealt with correctly, and that's a question of equipment rather than difficulty.
The service light needs resetting, and that is a separate step
Changing the oil doesn't tell the car you've changed it. The CBS entry for that item has to be reset, otherwise the car carries on counting down and asking for a service it's already had, and the record of when it was actually done is lost.
That reset needs equipment that talks to the car properly, not a sequence of button presses. It's the step that most often gets skipped when an oil change is done cheaply, and it's worth asking any garage whether they can do it for your particular car before you book, because a BMW that keeps asking for a service it's already had is a nuisance and it muddies the history when you sell.
Does a Mini work the same way?
Broadly, yes. Mini has been part of BMW since 2000 and shares the same condition based approach, the same style of service display and much of the same underlying engineering, including electronic parking brakes on plenty of models.
So most of this guide applies to a Mini as well. The specifics of which oil and which intervals still come down to the individual car, as always.
