Car electrics are where a lot of garages start guessing and swapping parts until something works, which gets expensive fast. The common jobs are actually well understood: an alternator that stops charging, a starter motor that won't turn the engine over, or worn ignition coils and spark plugs making the engine misfire. The trick is diagnosing which one it really is before you spend money on parts. That's what we do first.

We test the charging and starting system properly, tell you in plain English what has failed and why, then replace the alternator, starter, coils or plugs at your home or work. All makes and models. Based in Soham, we cover Ely, Newmarket, Cambridge and the villages in between, so you're not trying to limp a car that might not start to a garage across town.

Proper electrical diagnosis first

We test the battery, alternator and starter with the right kit before anyone buys a part, so you fix the actual fault, not the one that got guessed.

Alternators and starter motors

The two big charging and starting jobs, replaced on your driveway with a quality or genuine unit to suit your car.

Ignition coils and spark plugs

Misfires, rough running and a flashing engine light are often coils or plugs. We find the failing one and replace it, plus the set where it makes sense.

The fault explained, then a price

You get told what is wrong and what it will cost before any work starts. No mystery, no swapping parts and hoping.

Why proper diagnosis beats swapping parts

Electrical faults are the ones most often thrown parts at. A bit of testing up front saves you real money:

You fix it once

Testing the charging and starting system tells us whether it's the battery, the alternator or the starter, so you replace the part that has actually failed.

No paying twice

Swap a battery when it was really the alternator and you're soon flat again, then paying for both. Diagnosis stops that.

Caught early, cheaper to fix

A charging fault left alone flattens the battery and can leave you stranded. Sorting it early is a smaller job than a roadside recovery.

The diagnostic comes off the repair

If you go ahead with the work, the diagnostic fee comes off the price of the repair, so you're not paying twice to find and fix the same fault.

Alternator, starter or battery? What the signs mean

These three get muddled all the time, and the fix for each is different. Here's how to tell them apart. Not sure? We'll test it and give you a straight answer.

Battery or charging light on while you drive

The classic sign of a failing alternator. It means the car is running off the battery instead of being charged, so you have limited time before it goes flat.

Dim or flickering headlights, worse at idle

Often a tired alternator not putting out enough power. Lights that brighten when you rev and dim when you idle point the same way.

A jump-start works, then the car dies again soon after

Usually the alternator, not the battery. A healthy alternator would keep the car running once it's going; if it dies, it's not charging.

One click, or rapid clicking, when you turn the key

The lights and dash still work but the engine won't turn over. That points to the starter motor, or its connections, rather than a flat battery.

Nothing at all, no lights, no click, a dead dash

This is far more likely to be a flat or dead battery than the starter. If jumping it brings everything back and it stays running, the battery was the problem.

A whining or growling noise, or a hot electrical smell

Can be a failing alternator bearing or the drive belt. Worth checking quickly before it lets go and leaves you with no charge at all.

  • How much stripping is needed to reach the part on your engine
  • The diagnostic fee, which comes off the price if you go ahead with the repair
