Mobile Pre-MOT Check & MOT-Failure Repairs at Your Door

MOT due, or already failed? We check the parts an MOT tests, then fix the failures and advisories at your home or work across Soham, Ely, Newmarket and Cambridgeshire. Honest about one thing up front: we prep and repair, we do not carry out the test itself.

Guide pricefrom £20+ £20 call-out

A pre-MOT check is a look over your car against the things an MOT tester actually checks, done before test day so you are not caught out. Roughly a third of cars fail their MOT first time, and most of it is small stuff: a blown bulb, worn wipers, a tyre near the limit, a brake that needs attention. Spotting those in advance means you turn up with a car that passes, instead of paying for a retest and a scramble to fix things at the last minute.

We also handle the other side of it. If your car has already failed, or come back with advisories, we come to you and put the faults right at your home or work. We work on all makes and models, we tell you plainly what needs doing and what can wait, and we agree the price before we start. Based in Soham, we cover Ely, Newmarket, Cambridge and the villages in between.

A check against the MOT test items

We go through the parts a tester looks at: lights, tyres, brakes, wipers, mirrors, screenwash, suspension, exhaust and the visible structure. You get a clear list of anything that would fail or flag.

Failures and advisories fixed at your door

Failed already, or carrying advisories from last year? We put the repairs right on your driveway, so the car is ready for the retest without a garage trip.

An honest what-must-be-done list

We separate the genuine fails from the nice-to-haves, and never pad the list. If something can safely wait, we will tell you.

Priced up front, nothing hidden

The check has a set price and any repairs are quoted before we touch them. A £20 call-out to come to you, then only work you have approved.

Is a pre-MOT check worth it?

For most people, yes. It is cheaper than a fail, a retest and the panic that comes with them, and it puts you in control of the timing:

Avoids a wasted test fee

Turn up with a car that already passes, instead of paying for a test, failing, fixing, and paying again for a retest.

No last-minute scramble

Faults get found on your schedule, with time to sort them, not on test day when the centre needs the car back.

Clears old advisories before they fail

An advisory is a warning that something is on its way out. Dealing with it now usually costs less than waiting for it to become a fail.

Keeps you legal and safe

The MOT items are the safety basics: brakes, tyres, lights, steering. Sorting them early is the point, not just the certificate.

Common reasons cars fail the MOT

These are the faults we see most often, and most are cheap to fix before test day. Noticed any of them? Book a pre-MOT check and we will sort them at your door.

A blown bulb or a dim light

Lighting faults are one of the most common fails and one of the easiest to fix. A single failed bulb, front or rear, is enough to fail the test.

Worn or split wiper blades

Wipers that smear or leave streaks, plus an empty screenwash bottle, are a straightforward fail. Both are quick and cheap to put right.

Tyres near or below the limit

Below 1.6mm of tread anywhere across the tyre is an instant fail, and so is uneven wear or damage to the sidewall. We measure them properly and tell you where you stand.

Squealing, grinding or juddering brakes

Brakes that do not perform, or are worn or uneven, fail the test. A grind usually means metal on metal, and a judder points to worn discs. We can replace pads and discs on your driveway.

A knocking or clunking suspension

Worn suspension and steering parts show up as a knock over bumps or vague steering. They are common advisories that turn into fails if left.

A warning light stuck on the dash

Some dash warning lights are an automatic MOT fail, including airbag, ABS and the engine management light. We plug in and tell you exactly what is behind it.

When to book a pre-MOT check

If any of these sound familiar, it's worth booking in. Not sure? Ask us and you'll get a straight answer.

  • Your MOT is due in the next few weeks and you would rather not risk a fail
  • The car has just failed and you need the repairs done before the retest
  • Last year's certificate came back with advisories you never sorted
  • You have bought a used car and want it checked before the test is due
  • Something has started squealing, knocking or lighting up on the dash
  • You cover big miles and want the safety items looked over regardless

What affects the price

Whatever your car, the price is agreed with you up front and in writing: a £20 call-out, then a clear quote for the work. No hidden fees, no surprise on the bill.

  • The check on its own, or the check plus repairs
  • What the check turns up: a bulb is minor, brakes or suspension cost more
  • Make and model, since parts prices vary quite a bit by car
  • How many advisories or failures need putting right

The same job, without losing your day

Same tools, same quality parts, same standard, done at your home or work instead of a workshop. It is James who turns up, every time, so you are not explaining the car to someone new. Where a job genuinely needs a ramp he'll tell you straight, but most of what a garage does, we do on your driveway.

Pre-MOT Check, your questions

It is a look over your car against the items an MOT tester checks, done before your test so nothing catches you out. We go through the lights, tyres and tread, brakes, wipers and screenwash, mirrors, horn, seatbelts, suspension and steering, the exhaust and the visible bodywork and structure. You get a plain list of anything that would fail or come back as an advisory, and a price to put it right.

No, and we will always be straight about that. An MOT test can only legally be done at an approved test centre with the right equipment and a certified tester. What we do is the prep and the repairs: we check the car against the test items and fix the faults at your home or work, so it turns up ready to pass. If you need the test booked, a local centre handles that part.

The check is from £20, plus the £20 call-out to come to you, and any repairs are quoted separately once we know what your car needs, so you approve the cost before we start. Send us your reg and we will give you a clear, no-obligation price.

Yes, that is a big part of what this service is for. Bring us the failure sheet, or read us the points off it, and we will repair the faults at your home or work, whether that is brakes, bulbs, wipers, suspension parts or something the diagnostic picks up. Once the repairs are done you take the car back for its retest.

An advisory is the tester telling you something is wearing out or not far off a fail, even though it passed this time. Common ones are brakes getting low, tyres near the limit or a slight suspension knock. They are not urgent on the day, but they usually get worse and turn into a fail next year. Sorting them early is normally cheaper, and we can do it at your door.

A squeak on its own is not automatically a fail, but it is often the wear indicator telling you the pads are near the end. The test fails brakes that are worn beyond the limit or do not perform evenly, so a squeal is worth checking before test day. We will look at them and tell you honestly whether they need doing now.

Brake judder usually means the discs are warped or unevenly worn, and if that stops the brakes performing properly it can fail the test. Even where it scrapes a pass, it tends to be logged as an advisory that gets worse. We can replace worn discs and pads on your driveway so it is sorted before the MOT.

No. The timing belt, or cambelt, is not part of the MOT, so a pass tells you nothing about its condition. You have to track it yourself against your car's mileage and age interval, because if it snaps it can wreck the engine. If yours is due or you are not sure, ask us and we will check the interval for your car.

The check itself is usually under an hour. If we find faults and you want them repaired, that adds time depending on the job, a bulb or wiper is quick, brakes or suspension take a bit longer. It all happens at your home or work, so you are not stuck waiting anywhere.

We are based in Soham and come to you across Ely, Newmarket, Cambridge, Burwell, Fordham, Littleport, Mildenhall, Stretham, Witchford, Haddenham, Cottenham and the surrounding villages.
