At a garage a diagnostic is usually charged as a set fee or by the time it takes to trace the fault, and you have to get the car there and back. With us it's a fixed diagnostic fee of £20 carried out at your home or work, with the £20 call-out on top, and the fee comes off the repair if you go ahead. A plug-in code read at a parts shop can be free, but that only reads the code, it doesn't tell you the actual cause.

If a warning light is on or the car isn't running right, yes. The alternative is guessing, and replacing parts on a guess is how people end up spending far more than the diagnostic would have cost. A proper diagnostic tells you what's genuinely wrong before you pay for any repair, and often the fault turns out to be something small and cheap to put right.
