Mobile Mechanic for Electric Cars
Electric cars still need a mechanic, just a shorter list than a petrol one. We come to you across Soham, Ely, Newmarket and Cambridge for brakes, tyres, the 12V battery and fault finding. £20 call-out.
There's a myth that an electric car never needs a mechanic. It needs one less often, which isn't the same thing. There's no oil to change and no exhaust to rot, but an EV still has brakes, tyres, suspension, wipers, a cabin filter and a 12V battery, and it's heavier than the petrol equivalent, so some of those wear faster rather than slower.
We do the everyday work on electric cars at your home or work, the same as we would on anything else. What we don't do is anything involving the high-voltage system, and we'd rather tell you that up front than have you find out on the day.
Brakes
Pads, discs and fluid. EVs are heavy and regenerative braking means the friction brakes get used less, which brings its own problems.
The 12V battery
Yes, an electric car has one, and when it dies the car won't start any more than a petrol one would. Tested and replaced at your door.
Tyres and suspension checks
An EV carries a lot of extra weight, and tyres and suspension components feel it. We check wear, pressures and condition.
Diagnostics
Warning lights and fault codes read and explained, as long as the fault is not in the high-voltage system.
Cabin filter, wipers, bulbs
The small routine jobs that get forgotten because people assume an EV needs nothing.
An honest look over
If something needs an EV specialist, we'll tell you that rather than have a go at it.
Transparent pricing
The same labour prices as any other car, because the work is the same work. Every figure is labour only, with the £20 call-out and any parts on top.
| Job | Our labour | Parts |
|---|---|---|
| Call-out | £20 | Flat, anywhere we cover |
| Diagnostics | £20 | The full £40 comes off the repair if we do it |
| Brake pads, per axle | £80 | Pads quoted for your car |
| Brake pads and discs, per axle | £100 | Parts quoted for your car |
| Brake fluid change | £80 | Fluid about £10 to £15 |
| 12V battery replacement | £80 | Battery quoted for your car |
| EV service or health check | Quote | Different job from a petrol service, so it's priced per car |
The interim, full and major service prices on our pricing page are built around an oil change, so they don't apply to an electric car. Ask and we'll price the actual work your car needs.

What affects the price
Whatever your car, the price is agreed with you up front and in writing: a £20 call-out, then a clear quote for the work. No hidden fees, no surprise on the bill.
- Which car it is. Parts prices vary as much on electric cars as on anything else, and some models are dearer than others for the same job.
- Whether it's brakes, a battery or a diagnostic. Each is priced separately rather than bundled into a service.
- Whether the fault turns out to be on the high-voltage side, in which case we'll tell you and not charge you for work we can't finish.
The same job, without losing your day
Same tools, same quality parts, same standard, done at your home or work instead of a workshop. It is James who turns up, every time, so you are not explaining the car to someone new. Where a job genuinely needs a ramp he'll tell you straight, but most of what a garage does, we do on your driveway.

What we will and won't touch on an electric car
We do the mechanical and low-voltage side: brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, the 12V battery, cabin filters, wipers, bulbs and fault-code diagnostics. We don't touch the high-voltage side: the traction battery, the motor, the inverter, the high-voltage cabling or the on-board charger. That work needs specific electric-vehicle training and insulated equipment, and taking it on without them is genuinely dangerous rather than just unwise. If your fault is on that side of the line, we'll say so and you'll need a specialist.
Do electric cars actually need servicing?
Less than a petrol car, but not none. There's no engine oil, no oil filter, no spark plugs, no exhaust and no cambelt, which is most of a conventional service gone. What's left still matters: brake fluid absorbs moisture on the same timescale whatever drives the car, brakes seize if they're under-used, tyres wear faster under the extra weight, and the 12V battery dies on schedule like any other. Manufacturers still publish a service schedule, and warranties still depend on it.
Why EV brakes need more attention, not less
This one catches people out. Regenerative braking means the friction brakes do far less work, so the pads last for ages. That sounds like good news, and the wear is. The problem is that brakes which are barely used seize: the calipers stick, the discs corrode, and the first time you need them hard they're not what they were. On an EV the brakes want checking and freeing off more than they want replacing.
The 12V battery is the one that strands people
Every electric car still has an ordinary 12V battery running the lights, the locks and the computers that wake the car up. When it goes flat the car is dead on the drive, with a full traction battery and no way to use it. It's one of the most common EV call-outs there is, and it's a job we can do where the car sits, which matters when the car can't be moved.
