Clutch Replacement Cost

The short answer

We quote clutch replacement per car rather than publishing a single price, because the spread between a small hatchback and a heavier car with a dual-mass flywheel is far too wide for one number to be honest. We look at the car first for £20, then give you a fixed price before any work starts, and that £20 comes off the job.

Most sites answer this with an average that turns out not to apply to your car. We'd rather explain what actually moves the number, so you can tell whether a quote you've been given is reasonable. A clutch is one of the bigger bills a car will hand you, and it's worth understanding before you agree to it.

What it costs

SV Autos labour prices. The call-out and parts are charged separately.
JobLabourWhat that covers
Look at it first£20We check whether the clutch is genuinely the problem before anyone commits to replacing it. This comes off the cost of the job if you go ahead.
Clutch replacementQuoteQuoted for your car once we've seen it. The gearbox has to come out, so the labour depends heavily on the car rather than on a standard time.
Clutch and dual-mass flywheelQuoteIf the flywheel is worn it should be done at the same time, because the gearbox is already out. Quoted together.
Manual gearbox oilQuoteWorth refreshing while the box is out. Quoted alongside the clutch rather than as a separate visit.

The £20 look-first fee is a real price and comes off the repair. The clutch itself is quoted per car, in writing, before any work begins. We don't work to an hourly rate, so the number you're given is the number you pay.

How our pricing works

Labour

The prices above. Fixed for the job, not charged by the hour, so a job running long is our problem rather than yours.

£20 call-out

One flat fee to come to you, anywhere in our area. No mileage charges and no surcharge for being further out.

Parts

Quoted for your exact car. They vary too much between makes and models to publish honestly, so we price them properly rather than guessing.

You get the three added together, in writing, before any work starts. If the job changes once we are looking at the car, you hear it from us first.

What changes the price

Any price that starts with "from" needs explaining, or it is just a hook. Here is what actually moves the number for your car.

Getting the gearbox out
This is most of the cost, and it's why clutches are expensive. The clutch sits between the engine and the gearbox, so the box has to come off to reach it. On some cars that's a few hours. On others, particularly transverse engines in tight bays, it's a considerably bigger job on the same car you'd think was simple.
Whether the flywheel needs doing
Many modern cars use a dual-mass flywheel, which wears out and is expensive in its own right. If yours is worn, replacing the clutch without it means doing the whole job again later. This single question moves the total more than anything else.
Which parts go in
A clutch kit is usually the plate, the cover and the release bearing. Quality varies a lot and so does price. On some cars the slave cylinder sits inside the bellhousing and should be replaced while it's accessible, because reaching it again means removing the gearbox a second time.
Whether it's actually the clutch
Slipping and a high biting point usually are the clutch. A juddering take-up, a heavy pedal or trouble selecting gears can be the hydraulics, a cable, a mount or the gearbox itself, and those are very different bills. This is exactly why we look before we quote.

Your questions

How much does a clutch replacement cost?

We price it per car rather than publishing one figure, and we'd rather explain why than give you a number that turns out not to apply. Two cars of similar size can differ substantially on the same job, depending on how the gearbox comes out and whether the flywheel needs replacing too. We look at the car for £20, then give you a fixed price in writing, and the £20 comes off if you go ahead.

How do I know if my clutch is going?

The clearest sign is slipping: the engine revs climb but the car doesn't accelerate to match, usually noticed first in a high gear going uphill or when pulling away briskly. A biting point that has crept up towards the top of the pedal travel is another, and so is a burning smell after a hill or heavy traffic. Judder as you pull away can be the clutch, but it can also be mounts, so it's worth checking rather than assuming.

How long does a clutch last?

Anywhere from about 40,000 to well past 100,000 miles, and driving style matters more than mileage. Sitting at lights with the clutch held down, riding the pedal and a lot of stop-start town traffic all shorten its life. Steady motorway miles barely touch it. There's no schedule for it, so a clutch is replaced when it's worn rather than at an interval.

Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?

For a short while, gently, but it won't recover and it will get worse rather than plateau. The risk is that a clutch left too long can damage the flywheel, which turns a costly job into a more costly one. If it's slipping badly enough that you can't pull away properly or get up a hill, stop driving it and get it looked at.

Is the dual-mass flywheel always replaced with the clutch?

Not always, and anyone who tells you it's automatic isn't giving you the full picture. It's inspected once the gearbox is out and replaced if it's worn or has excessive play. If it's sound it can stay. What you should be wary of is a quote that ignores the question altogether, because if it does need doing and it isn't done, the labour gets paid for twice.

Can a clutch be replaced on a driveway?

Sometimes, and it depends on the car and on where it's parked. It's a substantially bigger job than brakes or a battery and it needs the car safely supported with room to work underneath, so it isn't a job for a sloped or narrow spot. We'll tell you honestly when we look at it, and if it genuinely needs a workshop we'll say so rather than start something we can't finish.
