Brake fluid is the one service item that goes off with time rather than use. A car that barely leaves the drive needs it changing on the same schedule as one doing 20,000 miles a year, which is why it gets missed so often. Here's what it costs and why it matters more than it sounds like it should.

What changes the price
Any price that starts with "from" needs explaining, or it is just a hook. Here is what actually moves the number for your car.
- How long it's been
- Fluid that's badly degraded takes more flushing to clear the system properly. It's the same job, but it isn't a job to rush, and we'd rather do it properly than get it done quickly.
- Which fluid your car takes
- Most cars use DOT 4. Some need DOT 5.1 or a low-viscosity variant for the stability control system to work as designed. The difference in cost is small, but fitting the wrong one is not an option.
- Whether the system has ABS quirks
- A few cars need a scan tool to cycle the ABS pump while bleeding, otherwise old fluid stays trapped in it. We can do this, and it's worth knowing because it's a reason some places will not do fluid on certain cars.
- Whether it's bundled with other brake work
- If pads or discs are being done at the same time, the wheels are already off. Ask us and we'll price the combination rather than charging as if they were separate visits.

How often does brake fluid need changing?
Most manufacturers say every two years, and unusually for a service item that's about time rather than mileage. Brake fluid absorbs moisture out of the air whether the car is being driven or sitting on a drive, so a low-mileage car needs it on the same schedule as a high-mileage one.
Why does brake fluid need changing at all?
Because it's hygroscopic, which means it pulls in water from the atmosphere over time. Water lowers the temperature at which the fluid boils, and brake fluid that boils turns to vapour. Vapour compresses where fluid doesn't, so the pedal goes to the floor at exactly the moment you need it most, usually after heavy or repeated braking.
What are the signs my brake fluid needs changing?
A pedal that feels softer or travels further than it used to is the main one, and fluid in the reservoir that's gone dark rather than clear or pale yellow is another. The honest answer, though, is that it often gives no warning at all, which is why it's done on a schedule rather than on symptoms.
Can I just top the brake fluid up instead?
No, and if the level has dropped you should find out why rather than topping it up. Brake fluid doesn't get used up. A falling level usually means either the pads have worn down, which is normal and self-corrects when they're replaced, or there's a leak, which is not normal and needs looking at straight away.
Can brake fluid be changed on a driveway?
Yes. It needs the wheels off and the car safely supported, which we do where the car sits. It takes a bit longer than people expect because the fluid has to be bled through properly at each corner rather than just drawn out of the reservoir.
