Brake judder or a vibration when braking? Causes and fixes
The short answer
A judder or vibration that comes on when you brake is nearly always warped or unevenly worn discs, so the pads grab a thick spot then a thin spot as the disc turns. You feel it as a pulsing through the pedal, and often a shudder through the steering wheel if it's the front discs. It's not usually an instant emergency, but it points to worn brakes and it's worth getting checked before it gets worse.
Where you feel the shake is a rough guide. A wobble through the steering wheel points to the front discs, while a pulse felt mainly through the brake pedal can be the fronts or the rears. The fronts do most of the braking, so they're the usual culprit either way, and the harder or faster you brake the more obvious it gets.
Common causes and what they mean
A few things could be behind it. Here's what each usually points to, and how serious it is.
Warped or distorted discs
Heat from heavy braking, then cooling unevenly, can leave the disc with high and low spots. The pads grab those spots as the wheel spins and you feel it as a rhythmic judder.
Unevenly worn discs
Discs wear thicker in some places than others over time, especially if the pads have been dragging. Same effect as warping, a pulse that builds the harder you brake.
Sticking or seized caliper
A caliper that isn't releasing keeps the pad pressed on one side, overheats that disc and warps it. Often comes with the car pulling to one side or a smell of hot brakes.
Wheel bearing play
A worn wheel bearing lets the disc wobble on its hub, which feels a lot like a warped disc under braking. Worth ruling out, as it's a different repair.
Loose or corroded wheel fitting
Wheel nuts that were overtightened, or heavy rust and muck behind the disc, can leave it sitting slightly off true and set up a vibration. Usually the cheapest thing to check first.
Can I still drive with brake judder?
A mild judder with brakes that still stop the car well is not an emergency, but the car is telling you the discs are past their best, so get it checked soon rather than leaving it. A strong shudder through the wheel, a pull to one side, a burning smell or a longer stopping distance means stop driving far and get it looked at, because a warped disc from a sticking caliper only gets worse and can take the pads and the good disc with it.
